SHARON OOJA

THE ONE WHO WON’T BE TYPECAST

She’s the much-loved actress who worked hard this year to break her playing stereotype and level up for 2019. Meet Sharon Ooja.

I didn’t always want to be an actress – I actually wanted to be a newscaster! Becoming a role model to a lot of young women inspires me, it’s like a push for me to show them that you can do it, you can work hard, you can be a voice. There’s a movie I just finished doing with Ebonylife, I was the lead character. It was about human trafficking and it was such a strong story with such a strong message, I can’t wait for that to come out. These stories, these characters that I play push me because I’m actually being a voice for a lot of people who can’t speak. You know sometimes when you watch a show or you watch a movie and you are like, “oh my God, that is so me”? Somebody in a movie is playing that character which means there are a lot of people like you out there. That is my number one push. I sincerely enjoy what I do, I wake up happy knowing that I’m going on set, I crave late nights on set and I have withdrawal syndrome when I’m not filming. I’ve turned down several roles and for different reasons. I’ve turned down roles because I felt like the pay wasn’t enough. I’ve turned down roles because, I feel like if I won’t be able to pull it off I would rather not take the role and not do justice to it. I recently broke the usual stereotype of the parts I play with the movie I just did with Ebonylife. I didn’t play my usual baby girl, character – long hair, pretty – I was stripped down, no makeup, no weave. So it’s something that I look forward to people watching because, like I said, if it was anything like what I’ve done before I would have turned it down. It’s very important especially at this stage in my career where I have been recognised to break out of being type cast. People know me, people identify with me and if I don’t break it now, I would continue like that for the rest of my career which means it will be a short-lived!
