Africa is a very large continent with 54 countries and is known for birthing some of the most beloved singers that we grow up listening to when our siblings, cousins, mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles and grandparents played them for us. So I came up with five South African singers you need to listen to! (disclaimer : I know that there are many more than just five but that list would be endless so five it is!)

  1. Miriam Makeba

Miriam Makeba nicknamed Mama Africa was a singer and civil rights activist who was one of the first artists to popularise African music around the world.

2. Lucky Dube

Lucky was South African reggae musician who recorded 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans.

3. Brenda Fassie

Brenda Fassie was anti-apartheid Afropop singer and was sometimes described as the ‘Queen of African Pop’.

4. Yvonne Chaka Chaka

Yvonne Chaka Chaka is an internationally recognised and loved singer and was the first black child to appear on television in 1981.

5. Hugh Masekela

Hugh Masekela is trumpetist, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and singer and studied classical trumpet at the Music and Manhattan School of Music
