19-year old South Sudanese model Adut Akech has been crowned Model of the Year at British Fashion Awards 2019.
Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the award show has been recognizing brands and individuals who are adding values and changing the fashion industry. Akech has used her voice, platform and work as a model to preach on increased and equal representation in the fashion award.
She picked the award this year, beating out competition from Adwoah Aboah, Kaia Gerber and Winnie Harlow, each of these models have also done so well in the year under review.
After receiving the award, Akech delivered an acceptance speech of inclusion and diversity in the industry; “It is important for all of us to remember that someone like me winning this award is a rarity, this is for the young women and men who found representation and validation in my work. I want them to never be afraid of dreaming big like I once did,” she said.
According to The Independent, Akech received resounding applause and standing ovation after her acceptance speech. She and other models of colour have continued to focus on bridging the gap for other upcoming models to have a serene environment within the industry.
Several celebrities including Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, Winnie Harlow, Jourdan Dunn, Leomie Anderson, Ruben Loftus and more were spotted at the event.
