One day not so long ago, I decided to transition my hair from the overly processed, bone-straight texture back to it’s God-Given natural state. It was a spiritual decision, Little did I know it would be a practical nightmare!

Okay, maybe I’m being a little dramatic, but put yourself in my shoes. I went from waking up every morning, take a shower, get my face on, grab some breakfast, and quickly comb my hair into a cute bun then head out to handle the world to: if I dare wake up without pre-twisting my hair out the night before, my entire day is ruined! That’s it, we are done, no going outside with this tumbleweed on my head!

That aside, you also have to be a scientist. Constantly keeping in mind the perfect algorithm of moisture (not too much, not too little); a regular deep conditioning schedule- keeping informed about which products are good or organic; and then romantic nights of finger-combing out a full head of knots.

And thats all before we talk about getting your hair to grow!

So when I discovered this organic gem on youtube about how to super grow your hair naturally and seeing the difference in a space of 6 weeks, I was both excited and skeptical. Through research I found out that women in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia have used rice water- the starchy water left over after rice is cooked or left to soak- as a hair treatment for centuries. It is thought to make the hair smooth and shiny, as well as help it grow faster.

Rice grains contain 75–80 percent starch and is thought to contain many of the vitamins and minerals that is beneficial to hair follicles. These include:

  • amino acids
  • B vitamins
  • vitamin E
  • minerals
  • antioxidants

2010 paper suggests that rice water may be beneficial for hair as it may reduce surface friction and increase hair elasticity. Befits such as detangling the hair; make hair smoother; increase its shine; makes it stronger and helps hair grow long.

How to make rice water

Washing rice in the sink

  • take ½ cup of uncooked rice
  • rinse thoroughly
  • place rice in a jar with 2–3 cups of water
  • leave to soak for at least 24 hours
  • strain the rice water into a sprits bottle.

How to use rice water

Rice water can replace a commercial conditioner. To do this:

  • wash hair with shampoo
  • rinse thoroughly with water from the tap
  • Sprits rice water onto hair from root to tip
  • massage the rice water into the hair and scalp
  • leave on for up to 20 minutes
  • rinse hair thoroughly using warm water from the tap
