The recently concluded BET Awards 2019 held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, was an exclusive event which celebrated Africans, African Americans and other American minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment.

The event featured live music performances, the awards ceremony and celebrity appearances.

As expected the red carpet was filled with dazzling looks from celebrities! From Mary J Blige’s Grecian look to Ciara‘s head-turning drape dress, keep scrolling to see some of our best looks at the event.

Asides the head turning fashion, we were especially enthralled by Marsi Martin’s win (she took home the young stars award)  and of course her hilarious reaction which went viral and has sparked a lot of memes. We have all had a good laugh. Now on a closer look, Marsi Martin stands to represent a very important demographic which is the Gen Z.

Gen z is the demographic cohort after the millennial. Demographers and researchers usually use the mid 1990’s to mid 2000’s as starting birth years. They are true digital natives in the sense that from birth , they have been exposed to the internet and to social networks. This context has produced a hyper cognitive generation very comfortable with collecting and cross-referencing many sources of information and with integrating virtual and offline experiences.

The Gen Z believe anything is possible and adapt differently to the term ‘hard work’. They work smart not hard and believe ideas rule the world. That is why we are witnessing an increase in young people achieving milestones that otherwise takes a considerable amount of time. At fourteen years, Marsi Martin is already an award winning actress and executive producer.

Here are two key things we can learn from the Gen Z;

  1. You can go your own way; The gen z have constantly shown that because we’ve been doing something the same way for a long time doesn’t mean there’s no better way of doing it. They’re open and eager to change and this is a trait we can all imbibe.
  2. We have got a lot to give one another; the gen z are doing away with time. They definitely aren’t waiting gone old enough to go after what they want. We all need this! You can be the youngest Hollywood producer at 14 just like Marsi!
