This year’s Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award left the continent in a jubilant mood for the simple fact that two of the acts that were given the nod in different categories of the event picked their various respective awards. Famed Nigerian Afropop superstar, Davido boldly won the Best International Act category which had other equally talented musicians like Cassper Nyvoest (South Africa), Stormzy (UK), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Niska (France), Distruction Boyz (South Africa), Stefflon Don (UK), J Hus (UK), Dadju (France) and Booba (France).
On the other hand, South African musician, Sjava Indlalifa also picked the ‘Viewers Choice: Best New International Act’ beating stiff competition from Niniola (Nigeria), Sjava (South Africa), Take A Mic (France), Prince Waly (France), Not3s (UK), Iamddb (UK) Mc Soffia (Brazil), Nailah Blackman (Trinidad And Tobago).
Furthermore, with this win, the two musicians have helped cement African music on the lips of the global audience. With one prominent question, is this the beginning of the music shine for Africa? A lot of past legends won the hearts of many with African themed music which the new generation is taking a step further. In Davido acceptance speech, he called on the international music communities to collaborate more with their African counterparts. Sjave received his award clad in traditional South African garment given an acapella of his hit songs.
The continent still has a lot of hard work to be done but these wins means, it is on the right path. Did you watch the BET Awards 2018, what does Davido and Sjava Indlalifa mean to you? Sound off in the comment box below.
