Tucked away in one of South London’s most vibrant quarters is Queen Esther Spa. This newly opened sanctuary sits just a stone’s throw away from Brixton tube station and boasts an array of services from mani-pedis and facials to the complete hammam experience.
Upon entry to the establishment, you will feel as though you have been whisked away from the hustle and bustle of rowdy Brixton and into an alternate universe of peace and tranquillity. No exaggeration! You’ll note the cosy interior right away; decorated in airy whites and royal purples with a marble floor and each door baring names like ‘love’, ‘hope’ and ‘dreams’ which set the tone for your visit.
Indulge in the Duchess package like I did which consists of a sauna, steam room and Turkish bath with an all-over body scrub. Or if you have more time you could upgrade to the Princess or even the Queen package. Massage anyone? Men, women and couples are all welcome, with the friendly staff on hand to guide you through your treatment, keep you hydrated and answer any questions that you may have. The sauna is state-of-the-art and whatever oil combination they used in the steam room left me feeling refreshed and invigorated long after.
As well as the services, Queen Esther also has a small range of products for sale including natural oils, soaps and even a line of matte finish lipsticks. So between visits, continuing to treat your skin and hair with the same care is no trouble at all. After the Duchess and a spot of shopping for soaps, I was served a savoury snack and lemon-tinged water in the chill out area. I closed my eyes, focused on the sound of rushing water (coming from the little fountain on the coffee table) and made a note to self: must come back here soon.
“Spa visits are seen as luxuries,” explains Queen Esther, sat beside me, sipping Kenyan tea. “But they should be thought of as part of one’s general wellness regime instead. And practised at least monthly…”
Well, who are we to object to that? Glam Queens and Kings get ready for your pampering…
