London came to life with Shades of Beauty Live, dubbed the ‘Black Beautycon’. The two-day expo was hosted at the Lindley Hall, attracting brand influencers, beauticians, women’s empowerment campaigners and a whole lot more. It was also a huge celebration of the mantra #MyShadeMatters which we love.
Among the many who are supporting the movement and showed up at the event were Vogue’s Contributing Editor, Funmi Fetto, Sharmadean Reid MBE and body positivity ambassador and author, The Slumflower (Chidera Eggerue). Shades of Beauty Live seeks to highlight the important aspects of the beauty industry like the lack of exposure or marginalization faced by people of colour from the mainstream media.
Nubian Skin, a lingerie brand that creates matching bodysuits and underwear for people with colour, created a stir, dressing models of different sizes for impromptu shows.
Shades of Beauty Live was held ahead of the Nothing Hill Carnival and included live interactive workshops including a hair workshop led by celebrity stylist Kevin Shanti. Kevin has been praised by popular presenter Maya Jama for his unicorn lace wig creation on Mariam Musa. And guests didn’t go home empty-handed – they went home with products from Palmer’s Cantu and Schwarzkopf, the official sponsors of the event.
