Singer John Legend and actress Tika Sumpter are developing a new series about Black Wall Street. John Legend with his production company Get Lifted Co., who have already created the hit show The Underground and Southside With You, a film about President Barack Obama’s and First Lady Michelle Obama’s first date which Tika Sumpter stars in are creating the show for WGN (an American basic cable company).
What is Black Wall Street you ask? Black Wall Street was established in the early 1900s in Greenwood, Oklahoma. The all black community grew their own wealth and was economically independent. Many important black doctors, leaders, entrepeneurs and more lived there. However white rioters burnt the whole town down, killing 300 people and displacing 9000 black people.
“We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America,” Get Lifted’s Mike Jackson told Deadline. “Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic.Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.”
If the series does get picked up then it could come out 2018.
