Kawree is the phonetic transcription for Cowrie (English) and Cauri (in French). The ever popular cowrie shell has many uses and meanings. It’s been used for exchange, taking on monetary value, jewellery, and religious accessories in almost every part of the world. Found in the islands of the Indian Ocean, the cowrie shell soon gained popularity throughout much of ancient Africa.
Building on this symbolic tradition, Kawree uses the analogy of the cowrie shell to encapsulate the new, immaterial, “currency” from the African continent. International Attention is exemplified by the plethora of expressions we hear and read everywhere today such as “Africa rising” and various hashtags ranging from #AfricansKillingIt. Using this, our online platform represents this rising of Africa in the way we, as African, are proud of.
Kawree is an ecommerce platform consolidating African products from beauty, fashion and design. Kawree is born from the passion of its co-founders. In April 2012, we started developing the concept while I was still at school. In November 2015 we reconsolidated our initial idea, fine-tuned the business model and rewrote the brief for the online platform. We then found the right IT developers and, finally, in January 2016, we started building the platform.
In June 2016 we travelled to Ghana to meet with a great number of Designers. The following month we convinced fifteen different brands to join us. We built their e-boutique on our platform, dedicating particular attention to their image and branding.
Each and every of our carefully-selected designer have the opportunity to benefit from an e-shop that includes a storefront image, a logo, a precise description of their collection, a video to invite customers further into their universe and a skyscraper banner to foster the uniqueness of their corner.
Kawree is committed to changing perceptions of Africa through a delightful and stressless shopping experience, embracing and promoting fashion, beauty and decor. Its uniqueness lies in its bold approach. We a particularly interested in working with designers that strongly infuse a touch of culture, tradition and history in their creations.
Our aim is to be the online destination for high-end African designers specialised in fashion, skincare, and design. We source the best of African creatives for international markets in order to unleash the potential of African brands through disruptive and agile digital marketing.
