Before the release of Queen & Slim, the director of the film Melina Matsoukas has caught the eye of fans with just the trailer.
Queen & Slim shares in the empathy of black people living in the United States. The battle to feel safe in the hands of the police. Hence, the story, two black couple, Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya had to go on the run after accidentally murdering a police officer.
Director of the film, Melina Matsoukas revealed to Stylist her growth in the film making, which was mainly due to the opportunities from black women. ”My career was carved out by black women”, she said. ”They were the ones who took chances on me when no one else did, starting with Beyoncé. It’s been my honour to represent black women on screen because I believe we’re queens”, she added.
She has worked with A-Listers like Beyoncé and Rihanna. Queen & Slim is her first move away from music video directing, after working with the aforementioned music superstars.
Queen & Slim was written by Lena Waithe, it officially premieres on January 31st.
