January 22nd was announced by the BBC in August 2018 consisting of twelve episodes, half-hour each.
Shooting has officially begun in London with Michaela Coel playing the lead character as Arabella Essiedu, a free-spirited Londoner with a bright career in writing, surrounded by great friends all the time, and aspired boyfriend she found on holiday in Italy. However, her entire life was called to question with a date-rape drug, the incident opened the door for several events about dating, sexual consent and modern life.
HBO and Chewing Gum creator, Michaela Coel’s FALKNA Productions will co-produce the series for BBC One to be shown in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Warner Bros. International Television Distribution Inc is responsible for selling the series in other parts of the world while HBO will distribute it in the United States, Canada and selected countries. January 22nd comprises a talented group of young rising stars in the United Kingdom including Paapa Essiedu, Aml Ameen, Adam James, Sarah Niles, Ann Akin and Weruche Opia.
Opia plays the character Terry Pratchard, the childhood friend and school mate of Arabella, who is struggling for space in acting while Essiedu stars as Kwame Acheampong, the best male friend of Arabella and Terry, he is an exercise class teacher. The series has been divided into two parts, Simon Maloney will produce episode one to six while Simon Meyers will produce episode seven to twelve, Coel and Sam Miller will direct.
January 22nd will hit screens in 2020.
