Recenty, self-described multiracial activist Group Never 21 made their way into Forever 21 store in the Union Square section of New York City. They group changed the displays and hanged a banner in the window of the store. In a bid to make a statement on how state violence impacts children.
According to a video published on Sunday, the group Never 21 sneaked into the fashion retailer’s display windows and left the mannequins wearing t-shirts inscripted with “Black Lives Matter.” The activists took over windows on the first and second floor of the retailer’s Union Square location.
The movement references the “countless underaged lives that have been lost at the hands of ‘vigilantes’ and disgruntled police officers.”
The protest was not in any way an attack on Forever 21, According to Gothamist the group sees it as “an opportunity for a huge company to stand behind Black Lives Matter.”
The group stated in its website:
“Countless underaged lives have been lost at the hands of ‘vigilantes’ and disgruntled police officers. These youth were never given the chance to see age 21, or any age there after, so we respond by reminding the public of the battle that we are still actively fighting. We care about the lives of Black men. We care about the lives of Black women. We care about the lives of Black CHILDREN.
We will not forget these lives – and will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that their voices continue to be heard.”
The display lasted about 20 minutes, it was later removed by store employees. Nevertheless the move attracted quite a bit of attention during a busy time in this heavily trafficked part of New York City.
However, it does not look like activists are backing out soon as they may continue to target the more than 600 Forever 21 stores worldwide.
“Whether they choose to support our message or be against it, this will not stop us from making sure that these voices continue to be heard,”
