Beauty brands always emphasize on the non-negotiable nature of skincare, products to use, how to use them, when to use them and all that. But have you ever considered, taking a break from skincare products might be the skincare routine you need?

We all want glowing, supple healthy skin and are willing to put in the work to get it that way. But the influx of loads of skincare products in the beauty market begs an important question, how safe are these products in the long run? They probably work now but the effects start to tell after years of consistent usage.

There’s nothing wrong with using skin care products especially ones that have been cleared as safe by the authorized bodies but once in a while, it would be great to give our skin a break from constant product usage and care for our skin the natural way.

Here are some ways you can take care of your skin without products:

  • Keep your body hydrated; Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated at all times. It aids the liver in eliminating toxins from the body, reduces puffiness and helps with kidney function.

  • Change your pillowcase regularly; When sleeping you are basically smooshing your face into your pillow, your skin in direct contact with the fabric of the pillowcase. It is essential to change the pillowcase regularly, keeping it clean at all times.


  • Get enough sleep; Beauty sleep is the real deal! While we slumber our bodies heal and regenerate cells.

  • Wash your makeup brushes and blender; If not cleaned regularly, old makeup, dust, bacteria and every other kind of junk is basically smeared around your face during each makeup application. This can cause inflammation, clogged pores, and acne.


  • Drink plenty of infused water; Fruit-infused water contains more flavor than fruit juices without the sugar, making it easier to drink more water. It’s like a double win, you are drinking more water and consuming fruits which are both essential for healthy skin.

  • Maintain a healthy diet; Foods get digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids that your body can use to build healthy skin. If you crash diet or eat highly processed foods, your skin won’t be as strong and supple as it could be. For example, if you don’t eat enough protein, you are depriving your skin of the amino acids that go into making collagen (which makes your skin strong) and elastic tissue (which makes it supple).

  • Exercise regularly; When we exercise, we circulate our blood which carries oxygen and nutrients to all of our cells. Not only does this provide an instant glow, but it also helps our skin to repair itself faster.


  • Don’t tug at your skin; While it’s tempting to squeeze a pimple, you can create a lot more lasting damage to the skin called acne mechanica, which is caused by friction from touching the face and pushing oil and bacteria back into the pore. So please don’t tug at your skin!
