Woah! Apparently, this is her fourth conviction for assault. Character has a way of revealing itself mindless of familiarity and social standing.
According to the Telegraph, Campbell has been convicted of assault and sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence in Italy. The ruling is the resolution of a dispute which dates back to 2009, when Campbell hit an Italian paparazzo with her purse, injuring his eye.
In a statement, Campbell’s lawyer said he would be appealing, but could not speak on the matter further: “We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident. Due to the ongoing legal process, we cannot discuss the matter further at this time,” Guido Carlo Alleva said.
In 2009, Campbell and her then-boyfriend Vladimir Doronin were sightseeing in Italy. Photographer Gaetano Di Giovanni allegedly followed the couple during their tour of Sicily; irritated, Campbell swung her purse at him, scratching his eye.
This is Campbell’s fourth conviction for assault. She previously pleaded guilty to assault in 2000 after throwing her cellphone at her personal assistant. Then in 2007, she pleaded guilty again to assault, this time after pitching a crystal-studded BlackBerry at her housekeeper. (The only thing that changes is the technology.) One year later, in 2008, Campbell pleaded guilty to, you guessed it, assault, after she kicked and spat on two police officers in London Heathrow Airport following a dispute over lost luggage.
A suspended sentence does not mean Campbell will be seeing the inside of a Sicilian prison anytime soon. In all likelihood, Campbell will have to complete community service or anger management courses and, if she behaves for the next six months, she’ll have completed her sentence.
