Hello readers I do hope you are seeing improvements in your hair following the 5 steps to healthier hair series. Since products play a huge part in caring for our hair I will dedicate this months posts to looking at the products I hear about the most from curly haired girls. I believe the key to deciding if a product works for you individually and is worth investing in is understanding how it works. This will be useful in seeing if its characteristics will support your individual hair goals. This week I’m focusing on Coconut Oil.
Here are my top 3 reasons why coconut oil supports healthy hair
1 Pre-Shampoo Treatment:
Detergent or soap-based shampoos can leave your hair dry, rough and hard. Sulphate -free shampoos are gentler for afro hair however, using a coconut oil pre-poo treatment minimises any over-stripping of the hair resulting in softer, smoother hair. This is due to Coconut oil being rich in lauric acid, which has a high affinity for hair protein, and easily penetrates inside the hair shaft, due to its low molecular weight.
Deep Conditioning Pre-Poo Tip: Apply some warm oil on damp hair at night and wash your hair the next morning.
2 Moisture Retention:
Coconut oil has a high moisture retaining capacity. It is not easily broken down or evaporated, so it slows down moisture loss, keeping hair moist and soft, which prevents breakage leading to longer locks.
3 Scalp Treatment:
Your scalp supports the growth and health of your hair so you need to ensure that it is supple and flexible. Because our hair follicles are not straight, we need to lubricate our scalps and coconut oil is fantastic at this. The various fatty acids present in this oil serve as very good anti-dandruff agents. Regular application of coconut oil can help you get rid of dandruff providing there are no underlying medical conditions present.
The Beauty of this oil is, whether your hair is natural or relaxed, it will help you achieve healthier hair as long as you are not allergic to coconuts.
Remember though, healthy hair starts within, so it is important to eat well, drink enough water and use good hair grooming techniques as discussed in our 5 step series.
