When travelling to another Country ,the linguistic language is not the only thing you should try to learn and become more familiar with,as we do not only communicate verbally but also through our body.French social customs are similar to other European etiquette and can be quite emotionally demonstrative, when they speak they often accompany with their speech with large hand movements ,Keeping a strong eye contact is also important as it shows you are paying attention.

And contrary to popular belief, the French do not all go around kissing each other on the cheeks when first meeting, this is reserved for friends and family in social situations, touching cheek to cheek whilst kissing the air is called “faire la bise”,the number of kisses can range from 1 to 4 depending on the region you are in France. If you are going to an interview or business meeting its best to stick to a formal handshake.

Have a look at Vogue’s decoding french gestures Video with Aymeline Valade for a visual demonstration.
