DID SHE REALLY DO ANYTHING WRONG?
White American women are apparently up in arms after what they see as a ‘racial bias’ after US First Lady Michelle Obama attended a ‘Black Girls Rock’ event.
The ceremony organised by entertainment channel BET is aimed at empowering and mentoring women of colour. The First Lady made a cameo at the event as part of her ‘Reach Higher’ education programme and posted snaps of her appearance on her official Instagram page.
While some (mostly black women) praised FLOTUS for lending her support for the event, other followers on the First Lady’s Instagram page criticised the move, some even going as far as calling it ‘racist’.
According to one user,
“I am all for the empowerment of disadvantaged groups, I just don’t see how alienating an oppressed group i.e. women by focusing on a subset of that group, helps anyone,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Black Girls Rock is leaving out all other girls of color. Brown is a color, yellow is a color, red is a color and yes, white is still a color. One day racism will end because we no longer NOTICE the color of our fellow human beings. ALL girls rock,” said another.
What do you think? Does the First Lady attending this event undermine her office?
Mrs Obama’s team is yet to make a statement addressing the backlash.
