It is a sad moment when a child is forced to question the nature of the father they once thought of as beyond transgression. Many of us grew up to the muses of the Huxtable family, laughing as Bill Cosby took on the larger than life character of Doctor Heathcliff Huxtable. He became a father to us, reflecting a generation of intellects who often used humour to convey a serious message. However, recent allegations have forced us to seriously second guess what we know. The most recent accusation came from Beverly Johnson herself who released an essay in Vanity Fair earlier last week claiming that Cosby had drugged and attacked her.
In truthfulness it was one of the most difficult pieces I have ever read. I wanted to refute it, to pick flaws, something to show that her story was incoherent. I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Instead I saw the plight of a woman who feels she had been taken advantage of; one who struggled to tell this very difficult story. What gave her to courage to do so? Beverly Johnson herself says “This is bigger than Bill Cosby. This is about women and violence on women. This is about women finding their voice.”
Just a few days ago Camille, Bill Cosby’s wife, broke her silence on the issue, making her first statement about these allegations. She blames the media for the mismanagement of the situation and raises the question of “Who is the victim?”
What do you think? Is the underling issue of this not so unfamiliar scenario really being addressed ?
